The father of two girls says a man broke into the family's Cockrell Hill apartment early Friday morning and touched his daughters.

The father told police and reporters that his daughters were watching TV in the front room, where they had been sleeping on a mattress, when a man entered the residence through a back window at about 5:15 a.m. Friday.

The girls said the man told them he was a friend of the family and offered to take them to the store to get candy. At some point the man began touching the girls over the clothing, and one of the girls called out to her father.

As the father came into the room, the man exited the front door.  The father chased the man into the parking lot but was unable to catch him. After the man disappeared, the father called police.

The father said it was dark and all happened very fast and that he didn't get a very good look at the man, though he did provide police with a partial description.  He also adds that the man, despite his claim, was not a friend of the family.

Police said the girls, ages 9 and 5, were taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.  Neither were injured. Police said the man was inside the home for about 10 minutes before he was chased out.

Cockrell Hill police confirmed the man tried to get the girls to leave with him and that there was physical contact between the intruder and the girls, but that that contact was not sexual and they were not injured. Police are continuing to investigate and have classified the incident as burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony.  The charge is a first degree felony punishable with a possible life sentence and a fine of $10,000.

The incident took place at the Cedar Square Apartments at 500 Andrews Avenue.

NBC 5's Mark Schnyder contributed to this report.

It was initially believed that the girls were sleeping at the the time the man entered the apartment, that was not the case. We regret the error.

The Arrocha family's Christmas was a little less bright this year. They're still searching for 77-year-old Maria Arrocha, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. She's been missing since Dec. 18.

Concerns Grows for Missing Arlington Woman

77-year-old Maria Arrocha suffers from Alzheimer's and she's been missing since Tuesday, her family is concerned for her safety especially with the temperatures falling at night.

Arlington police say they have found the body of a 77-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease who disappeared last month.

Maria Arrocha wandered out of her Arbor Lane home at New York Avenue and Park Row Lane on Dec. 18.

Arlington police found her body in a wooded area near 1500 E. Abram St. on Thursday afternoon. The Tarrant County medical examiner positively identified the woman as Arrocha on Friday.

Her death was determined to be caused by exposure to the elements.

Martin Arrocha, her son, said he had mixed emotions, saying he was "a little bit angry because we couldn't find her in time, relief because we know she's in a better place today."

Police officers were working closely with volunteer group Search One Rescue Team, which uses K-9s, as part of an ongoing effort to find Maria Arrocha when her body was discovered.

Her family had been searching for Arrocha since her disappearance. They passed out fliers in both English and Spanish throughout North Texas and spent Christmas looking for her.

NBC 5's Mola Lenghi and Amanda Guerra contributed to this report.

TxDOT Crews on Standby for Winter Weather

Highway crews are on alert to respond if necessary, especially in the counties to the south and west of the Metroplex.

More Photos and Videos

We are watching a major winter storm in West Texas. Heavy snow is likely from San Angelo, Midland and Odessa west through the mountains to El Paso.

Here in the Metroplex  the air remains very dry, so any precipitation here will be very light.  Expect a mixture of sprinkles, snowflakes, snow grains and perhaps a few sleet pellets, but with no accumulation locally.

Most of the precipitation will evaporate before reaching the ground across the Metroplex -- but there could be a dusting to perhaps 1/2 inch of snow to the southwest (around Stephenville, Comanche, Hamilton, Brownwood), and a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for that area.

Any wintry weather that develops in North Texas will end Friday morning. The weekend will be clearing and dry.

TABC Investigates Night Leading Up to Fatal Cowboys Crash

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 03 Januari 2013 | 12.13

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is looking into the events leading up a fatal crash involving two Dallas Cowboys players.

NBC 5 has learned more about the night leading up to the crash which killed Dallas Cowboy Jerry Brown, Jr. A grand jury indicted Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent on one count of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the Dec. 8 crash.

According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and NBC 5 sources, a group that included Brent and Brown began their night at Eddie V's in the Oak Lawn section of Dallas.

The group, according to the TABC was allowed to leave with an unopened bottle of wine which is legal.

There was more than an hour gap between the group arriving at their next location—Club Privae which is located inside of Beamers, in Dallas.

The two are roughly 10 miles apart.

The TABC is trying to determine what took place between those two spots.

It is also trying to figure out how much alcohol was served in each location, and whether either over-served Brent.

Agents have been speaking with staff at both places, and obtained video from within Privae. The agents are also looking at social media like Twitter, to get a better idea of what was going on inside the club.

NBC 5 has obtained the TABC record for Beamers— which TABC says only has minor violations listed.

If any action is taken against the club, the fact that the record is not long will be taken into account and work in the club's favor.

Actions range from fine, suspension to even cancellation of the club's alcohol permit.

The TABC may interview other Dallas Cowboys players who were at the club with Brent.

The owner for Eddie V's did not have a comment. Beamers has said in the past it is working with the TABC in this investigation.

No trial date for Brent has been set, he is currently out of jail on $100,000 bond.

A Fort Worth police officer was arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of drunken driving in Keller, police say.

Officer Nicolas Ramirez, 32, was stopped by Keller police near the 1200-block of state Highway 114 in Westlake at about 1:20 a.m.

Keller police said Ramirez blew .188, more than twice the legal limit - .08.

Fort Worth police said Ramirez, who since Aug., 2012 has been a DWI Enforcement Officer, has been placed on restricted duty status with his gun and badge confiscated pending the outcome of the investigation.

"Our organization works hard to keep our streets safe during all holidays.  It is extremely troubling that one of our police officers, especially a DWI enforcement officer, has been arrested in this manner.  I apologize to Chief Mark Hafner and the citizens of Keller for the poor judgment of our employee.  Our residents can be assured that this matter will be handled expeditiously and to their expectations," said Fort Worth Chief of Police Jeffrey Halstead in a statement.

Ramirez, who has been with the department for four years, is expected to be charged with a Class A misdemeanor.

A chorus of coughs greets everyone who walks into a North Texas urgent care center.

"I thought it was allergies at first," Christina Hester said. "It stayed for two weeks, and then I got a fever this morning, so I decided to come in."

Dr. William Thomas at Burleson Family Medical Center said people coming in have a little of everything -- allergies, strep throat, upper respiratory infections and plenty of flu cases.

"I wish people would have gotten their flu shots early, because the people who've gotten their flu shot this year, we've not seen them come back," he said.

Thomas said his clinic has had a busy couple of weeks. Patients say they aren't surprised when they have to wait a while to see a doctor.

"Oh yes; everyone I know is either starting to get sick or just got over something," said Micaela Cutler, a patient who was soon heading to the pharmacy to pick up Tamiflu. "I'm definitely not by myself here."

Thomas is prescribing people who are healthy and want to stay that way the usual -- "plenty of rest, plenty of fluids, wash your hands and get your flu shot."

High-Res Photos Coming to Arlington Red-Light Cams

advertisement

Arlington is installing red-light cameras with improved technology.

The city is beginning to install new cameras that produce high-resolution pictures and 12-second video clips that further illustrate a possible violation, offer 24-hour video surveillance and can monitor up to 20 vehicles at once for more than 300 feet.

While the new cameras can also detect speed, Arlington police say they won't be used to issue speeding violations.

The first new camera is located at the intersection of Fielder and Randol Mill roads. More are expected to be installed at other city intersections throughout the year.

Red-light cameras are a fixture at most Arlington intersections.

"I think it's a good thing, because I see people running red lights all the time and I think it's very dangerous and if they can keep people from doing that, the more they can stop people the better," Karen Brougham said.

Dee Dee Carr, a mother of two young drivers, agreed.

"I think it's really good, and I think it'll keep folks obeying the law and prevent accidents and people getting hurt," she said.

Austin Eaby said he doesn't mind red-light cameras too much.

"I was T-boned at an intersection not too long ago at an intersection," he said. "Someone ran a red light and T-boned me."

But Eaby said he still has reservations about the cameras.

"I think it's kind of almost cheating -- trying to get us on video when [police] could be out themselves trying to catch us," he said.

Jody Hawkins described himself as a defensive driver who likes having the cameras.

"I think police forces are underfunded, and I think this helps offset the cost of that," he said.

Police say drivers caught on camera are not issued a ticket but receive a civil infraction, meaning they get just a fine and not points on their record.

While the cameras generate revenue, APD said their use is about keeping intersections safe, not about making money.

A Dallas County sheriff's deputy freed a kidnapping victim during a routine traffic stop early Sunday morning.

According to the sheriff's department, Sgt. Bryan Sherman pulled over a driver for speeding near Second Avenue and U.S. 175 at about 12:15 a.m.

After noticing a strong odor of alcohol, Sherman began performing a field sobriety test on the driver. Suddenly, a man got out of the truck and said "malo mans," meaning "bad men."

Sherman and Capt. Mark Howard quickly discovered that the man had been kidnapped and robbed by two men in the car following a traffic crash earlier in the evening.

The victim told police that he had been in a car crash with the men, Gregory Ramos Guzman, 43, and Ruben Segoviano, 38, near Interstate 30 and Fort Worth Avenue. He said the men demanded money for damages but he didn't have any money to give them.

Guzman and Segoviano forced him to drive them to his home to get property to give them that would cover the cost of the damages, the victim said.

"There is suspicion that they were going to do something else besides just rob and kidnap him," Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez said during a press conference.

Deputies found money, as well as other property, on Guzman and Segoviano during a search. Deputies also found two 10-inch knives in the truck.

"I want to recognize the diligent efforts of all our deputies involved," Valdez said in a statement Monday. "Dallas sheriff's department deputies work hard around the clock, and I am proud to say they continue to help protect our communities."

Guzman and Segoviano each face charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping and presumably were still ticketed for speeding.

Both are being held on immigration charges.

Garland firefighters are working around the clock to raise money for one of their own who was injured in a car crash that may have left him paralyzed for life.

Devon Colbert, 28, may not walk again after a car crashed into his vehicle on Dec. 17 in Rockwall. His 2-year-old son was also strapped into the car but was not hurt.

Emily Colbert watched her husband follow his lifelong passion to become a firefighter, only to have the unexpected setback thrown in their path.

"It breaks my heart," she said. "It breaks my heart, because I know how hard he worked to get where he is. I know how hard we've worked as a family to get where he is."

The Garland Fire Department has been working to raise money for her and their two young boys, covering shifts and making 24-hour visiting rounds at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation.

"If it wasn't for our faith, we would be on the ground," Emily Colbert said. "If it wasn't for our extended fire family and family coming and picking us up, I don't know how we would be making it."

"He would do the same for me in a heartbeat," said Ross Dyer, who filled in for Colbert on his New Year's Eve shift. "He would do the same for anybody in this department."

Devon Colbert has been working at the Garland Fire Station No. 7 for the past year, but it took him nearly seven years just to get a job in the department. Before, he was a volunteer with the Rockwall Fire Department.

"He is so thankful to have this job," firefighter Jerry Click said. "He gets here almost two hours early before his shift starts, and he's the last one to leave. He works nonstop."

Emily and Devon Colbert are holding onto their hope that one day he'll be back where he always wanted to be.

"He will walk again," Emily Colbert said. "I have to believe that; that's what I'm holding onto in my heart."

A 48-year-old Denton County woman is in a Dallas hospital after being shot by a family member overnight Saturday, according to the Denton County Sheriff's Dept.

Officers said someone called 911 from a home on the 1300-block of Oakcrest in Providence Village. The person hung up but deputies were dispatched to the address.

Deputies arrived at the house shortly after a second 911 call. They discovered the woman had been shot and a 50-year-old man, was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Paramedics flew the woman to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.  Her condition is not known.

A third adult woman was in the house at the time of the shooting, but she was not physically injured. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department said that woman is the couple's 23-year-old mentally disabled daughter. She is now with family members.

The Sheriff's office believed the daughter made the second phone call to 911.

Investigators believe the man shot himself after shooting the woman.

The shooting is under investigation, though police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shootings.

Investigators are trying to find the person who torched several classic cars at a business in Forney on Christmas Day.

Gerald Gauthier, owner of the Mustang Shop, said a friend called on Christmas morning to tell him that several cars parked outside his lot were on fire.

"He said, 'Your business, it looks like a war zone,'" he said.

Gauthier arrived to find three classic Mustangs gutted and several more with smashed windows.

"The first thing he did is, he went to destroy glass on all the vehicles," he said.

The vandal was caught on surveillance cameras installed outside Gauthier's business.

In the video, the person can be seen walking up to the vehicles, smashing the windows and then lighting something on fire. Shortly afterward, several of the vehicles can be seen erupting into flames.

"They're gone; they're completely gone. The '69 is somewhat salvageable, but these two here, they're just plain gone," said Gauthier while pointing to two classic Mustangs that were scorched and gutted by flames.

Gauthier said it has taken years to build up his business. What happened will set him back thousands of dollars, he said.

"I think someone that does this wouldn't hesitate to do it again to someone else," he said.

Now he just wants the person caught before he strikes again.

"I think somebody doesn't have any Christmas spirit," he said. "I don't have any words for it. I couldn't really even explain it."

Fort Worth Gun Show Draws Big Crowds

NBC 5's Sara Story reports on one of the first gun shows in North Texas after the Tragedy in Sandy Hook. Fears over gun control regulation prompted many gun collectors to show up.

More Photos and Videos

Gun enthusiasts were met with long lines at the Will Rogers Memorial Center for The Original Fort Worth Gun Show.

"The attendance has just been over the top," The Original Fort Worth Gun Show owner Tim Finucane said.

Finucane said the gun show has been in his family for decades, but Saturday's crowd was a first. He said this crowd was driven by the uncertainty of gun laws in the wake of the school shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut that killed 20 children.

"The talk of restricting gun ownership, restricting ammo, restricting accessories, people are concerned," Finucane said. "They think they need to get out and buy it before the government takes it away."

President Obama has formed a team that will look at gun control laws and possibly recommend new regulations.

As the demand for guns increased, so has the prices.

"Last year, I paid $345 for my .40 caliber hand gun. Now. I paid $557," gun owner James Smith said.

There were no protests visible to NBC DFW crews on Saturday.  However, a small crowd held a protest outside The Dulles Center in Virginia where "The Nations Gun Show" took place.

The Fort Worth gun show closed Saturday night but will re-open Sunday morning at 10. The owners expect a full house.
