North Texans Shocked by Conn. School Shooting

Even though Texas is thousands of miles away from the tragedy in Connecticut, North Texans still feel the pain.

Dozens of parents, teachers and students attended a candlelight vigil hosted by Liberty High School students in Frisco on Friday night.

"We wanted to make sure the families know they do have support. There is more than just evil in the world. People are good, and this is just one of those things that can come of tragedies," senior Chelsey Chandler said.

"I think that's what's important -- this needs to be a wakeup call," senior Lauren Tonkovich said. "We all need to start caring more about others and stop being so self-centered and caught up in our own time. I just think that could be a huge help in the future."

"I just could not image what these parents are going through or how you catch your next breath, so my prayers are just with those families," parent Shaw Walker said. "We just have to see the good in each other and come together as a community, as a state, as a country. Our differences don't matter when things like this happen."

Parents attending the high school 3A State Championship game at Cowboys Stadium said news of the school shooting shocked them.

Netha Elliott, who has four young children, said she hugged her youngest when she heard the news.

"Just talk to them about how important it is to tell each other you love each other every day, before school and be so thankful that we make it through life every day," she said.

Parent Laurie Lively said she cried when she heard the news.

"It's hard to know what goes through your mind," she said. "It's confusion. The most astounding thing is what goes through your stomach and your heart -- just totally heartbroken."

Police said it will be a time consuming process to identify the victims of the Sandy Hool Elementary School shooting.

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Newtown Friday night to remember the students and teachers lost in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as Connecticut authorities prepared to release the names of the 20 children and six adults killed in the attack, perhaps as early as Saturday morning.

So many people had shown up for a vigil at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown—a town of 28,000—that dozens, unable to get in, watched the service through open windows and doorways.

"I think about these children … and I know we have 20 new saints, 20 new angels," Monsignor Robert Weiss told the standing-room-only crowd. "But that doesn't take away the pain. It doesn't take away the hurt. But it does bring us closer together."

Earlier in the morning, 20-year-old Adam Lanza had stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School, where his mother worked as a kindergarten teacher, and opened fire. By the time his shooting rampage had ended, 20 small children and six adults had been killed. He, too, was found dead at the scene. A woman believed to be his mother was also found shot dead in a Newtown home.

Investigators spent hours questioning Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan, who told them that Adam had a history of mental health issues and that they had not spoken in two years, NBC News reported.

It was the second-deadliest school shooting in American history, second only to the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that killed 32.

President Obama, addressing the nation in the wake of the tragedy, teared up as he talked about the young victims.

"The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," he said at a news conference. "They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.

"So our hearts are broken for them today."

Two 9mm handguns recovered at scene—a Glock and a Sig Sauer—were legally purchased and registered to the shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza.

Students and parents described a scene of terror when the shots rang out early Friday morning. Witnesses said the attack occurred during morning announcements.

The brother of one student said his sister had heard screams coming over the intercom.

"When they were leaving the room … (state police) were telling the students to hold hands and close their eyes until they were outside," he said.

Back at the vigil, mourners wrote messages on three easels erected at the entrance to the church.

"May God look after and take care of your little angels," one wrote. "We are so so sorry for your loss. God bless your families. His strength will guide you."

Another wrote: "Sleep in heavenly peace."

Becky Mantone, who drove three of her daughters from nearby Fairfield to the vigil, said she didn't know anyone directly impacted by the attack, but felt compelled to take part so they could provide some small bit of comfort to their neighbors.

"We wanted to give our support to this town," Mantone said while she and her daughters stood in a circle, cradling lit candles outside the church. "I hope people would help our town if God forbid something happened to us."

As the investigation continues, officers have been assigned to the parents so the information is communicated directly to them, according to state police. Law enforcement officials said they were preparing to release the identities of the victims and could do so as early as Saturday.

2 Killed in Kaufman County Plane Crash

Two people died in a fiery plane crash in Kaufman County on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane went down at about 10:30 a.m. near Scurry, killing both occupants. The plane was destroyed on impact, and only part of the fuselage, wing and canopy were visible among the charred remains.

The names of the pilot and passenger have not yet been released.

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the plane was a former Soviet-era military trainer jet, an L-29 Delfin.

The plane took off from the Lancaster Airport, where several L-29s are operated by private pilots.

Former Dallas County Constable Roma Skinner, who operates a plane at the Lancaster Airport, said news of the crash was a shock.

"I'm sure that we do know that person, and we're kind of sad," he said.

Two L-29s are on display at the airport at the Cold War Air Museum.

The museum's Don Stringfellow said the L-29 is a popular option for hobby pilots who want to fly military jets.

"It would be an inexpensive way, and you could actually get these in private ownership, where most American jets are mothballed and not permitted in private ownership," he said.

L-29s were used to train military pilots for service in Soviet MiG jets.

The museum also has a MiG on display.

The wreckage of the crash was spread over a large area along the Trinity River near State Highway 34 between Kaufman and Ennis.

The victims could not immediately be identified. No flight plan was required for a takeoff from Lancaster, so there's on official record of who was on the plane.

"It's very sad, very sad," Skinner said. "Aviation, it's a risk everybody takes. You get on an airline, you never know if you're going to get back."

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Bureau.

Defensive tackle Josh Brent faces an intoxicated manslaughter charge in Saturday morning's accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown. Brent is free on bond. Police and prosecutors met today to discuss the case.

The Irving Police Department on Thursday released two 911 calls and a dashboard-camera video of the fatal one-car crash scene involving Dallas Cowboys players Josh Brent and Jerry Brown Jr.

Brown was killed in the crash, and Brent was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

In the 911 calls, two different callers report an upside-down vehicle on the frontage road to State Highway 114 near Rochelle and O'Connor roads.

One of the callers reported seeing smoke coming from the vehicle, and the other said the car was on fire.

In the short video, Brent's car can be seen upside down in the roadway. Video of other activity at the crash site was not released.

Brown remembered at vigil in hometown

A memorial was held Thursday evening in St. Louis at Brown's former high school to honor the athlete.

Three dozen people holding candles and pictures talked outside Vashon High School about their memories of Brown.

Brown's mother, Stacey Jackson, said she had spoken to Brent and forgives him.

"I talked to Josh today before we came to the vigil, and I just told him to keep his head up; we're praying for him," she said. "And I still love him. He can call me at four in the morning; he can call me at twelve crying -- I don't care, because Jerry loved him like a brother."

Brent is just like one of her sons, she said.

"It was an accident. We were all young once. We've all done something stupid; we've all regretted what we've done, but we're here to live and see another day," she said. "Jerry's accident was God's way to tell us it was time for his servant to come home. And then Josh -- to get from this, he needs to go out and teach other people and reach other players and let them know never be ashamed to call and ask for a ride. Never be embarrassed, because that's what that service is there for."

Prosecutor expects grand jury to hear case next month

Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Harris Heath said Thursday he is confident the intoxication-manslaughter case will go to trial.

"The fact that Mr. Brent is a Dallas Cowboy or any attention this case has gotten -- we're not going to treat it any differently," he said.

Heath, whom Irving police briefed on the case, said he would look at all the factors, including evidence from the scene, such as sobriety tests.

The day of the crash, Irving police said Brent was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

Exclusive police documents obtained by NBC 5 show that Brent failed tests such as the walk-and-turn, one-leg stand and visual sobriety tests that required him to follow light stimulus with his eyes. According to the documents, the responding officer said Brent "could not stand without swaying and following the green light stimulus that I was using. Mr. Price-Brent even caught himself swaying."

Heath said he expects a grand jury to take the case by January.

"Josh ought to get the same fair shake from the system that anybody else gets," said George Milner, Brent's attorney.

Brent is free on $500,000 bail.

Father Accused of Carving Pentagram Into Son

Richland Hills police say Brent Troy Bartel is accused of carving a pentagram on his 6-year-old son's back, telling a 911 dispatcher that he did it because "it's a holy day."

A Richland Hills man has been arrested and charged with assaulting his son after telling a 911 operator he carved a pentagram into his 6-year-old son's back.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a home on the 3700-block of Ruth Road after the boy's father, identified by police as Brent Troy Bartel, called 911 and said, "I shed some innocent blood."

When the dispatcher asked what the man meant by that, the man replied, "I inscribed a pentagram on my son."

The dispatcher asked why and the man said, "It's a holy day."

At the same time, the child's mother called 911 from a neighbor's home claiming her husband was hurting their child.

Officers arrived at the home and found the child cold, standing in only pajama pants with a large pentagram carved into his back.  The carving covered most of the boy's back, police said.

Officers wrapped the boy in a jacket and turned him over to paramedics.  The child was transported to Cooks Children's Hospital for treatment.  Child Protective Services and a crime victim liaison are working with the boy and his mother.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that the carving isn't deep enough to require stitches and that the child is expected to be OK physically.

At the scene, officers also recovered a box cutter they believe Bartel used to make the carving.

Bartel was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon - family member.  He is currently being held on $500,000 bond.

The father's call to 911 was placed at 12:10 a.m., just minutes after the day 12-12-12 began. The date is not known to have any holy or religious significance, though, along with 12-21-12, has drawn attention from numerologists and those concerned with doomsday prophecy.

Minor Quake Shakes Burleson, Southern Fort Worth

A minor earthquake hit just east of Burleson on Wednesday night.

The 2.6-magnitude quake's epicenter was about two miles east of Burleson, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's website.

The quake struck at 8:10 p.m. at a depth of about 8.1 miles, the USGS said.

Fire and police in Fort Worth, Everman and surrounding areas were inundated with calls reporting the earthquake.

Viewers contacted NBC 5 shortly after the quake, saying they felt their houses shake.

NBC 5's Keaton Fox said the earthquake jolted him awake in south Fort Worth near Burleson. His neighbors also felt it and starting shouting, he said.

Threats Raise Security Level at EMSISD Schools

Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District has heightened security at several school campuses after rumors began circulating recently of threats at Saginaw, Boswell and Chisholm Trail high schools.

The school district said the district learned of threats late last week and that they have worked with law enforcement to investigate each and every report received.  Officials said no "evidence to substantiate the original rumor, or any rumors thereafter" has been found.

The district said it will continue to take the rumored threats seriously and that students should report any information they have to school staff.

The following letter was sent home to Saginaw High School families:

Dear SHS Families,

I am contacting you today to address rumors that are circling regarding the safety and security of our campus. Late last week, we received a report regarding an alleged threat to the security of the campus. In partnership with Saginaw Police Department and our administrative team, we have thoroughly investigated this report and have been unable to substantiate any of the details.

Even though these rumors are so far unsubstantiated, we are taking additional precautions to insure the safety of our students and staff. We have increased the presence of our staff in our hallways and at lunch. For the time being, we are also implementing additional security measures inside and outside of the school.

I will be communicating with our staff and students to reassure them of our actions regarding this situation. If you still have concerns about the safety of your student, please contact your house office staff (see below).

Even though we are not able to validate the facts provided, we take very seriously the charge we've been given to protect our students and staff and continue to monitor this situation closely.

Dash Cam Video Shows Cedar Hill Chase

Police have released dramatic video of a high-speed chase that wound through Cedar Hill neighborhoods last month and resulted in several crashes.

Investigators say the Deric Williams and Craig Crayton robbed a Shell gas station at gunpoint and then fled in a gold Cadillac the morning of Nov. 30. The men then drove to a normally quiet neighborhood near Streamside Drive -- where police were waiting.

The camera inside a patrol car shows the men nearly hit a garbage truck head-on and crash into trash containers while they wove through residential neigbhborhoods.

The video shows the car hop a curb, speed down a median and run a light at a busy intersection while driving north on Joe Wilson Road. While barreling through the intersection, the car hit another vehicle.

One of the men -- identified as Williams by police -- can be seen jumping out of the vehicle and running. The other man then slides into the driver's seat and takes off while officers chase down Williams.

Police said Crayton then drove about another mile before entering Dallas' jurisdiction, where the chase ended.

A woman who was in the car was not connected to the robbery and was not charged in it, police said.

Three people were treated for minor injuries sustained in collisions during the chase.

Police said Williams and Crayton confessed to an aggravated robbery in Duncanville in which a shot was fire. They are also suspected to a crime in Dallas, as well, police said.

Almost 500,000 Tollway Users Billed for Old Tolls

The NBC 5 Investigates team has discovered nearly 500,000 toll road users are now receiving bills for trips that took place months ago or, in some cases, even years ago.

NBC5 Investigates started looking into the issue and learned that under an old North Texas Tollway Authority policy, ZipCash bills were mailed to motorists only after a customer made five trips on area toll roads.

This fall, the NTTA lowered the threshold to three trips, which resulted in bills being sent out to all motorists who had logged three or four trips -- regardless of how long ago the trip had been taken.

Through an open records request, NBC 5 Investigates learned that the NTTA stands to collect $2,313,317.68 if the bills are paid. That amount could rise even higher because the NTTA still plans to charge late fees to customers who don't pay their old tolls on time.

A few weeks ago, Ernest Parrish contacted NBC 5 Investigates after he got a bill last month for driving on the Sam Rayburn Tollway nearly two years ago.

"What I don't understand is why it took so long. They're supposed to be billing these things right away," he said.

Cynthia McDonnough just got a bill for a toll road trip from eight months ago.

"[In] April and now in December I'm getting billed?" said McDonnough. "I put it on Facebook and I think I had five or six of my friends immediately respond, 'Yes, I got one from November.' 'I got one from December.'"

The toll road users NBC 5 Investigates spoke to said they don't dispute the NTTA's right to charge. But they said they find it ironic that the NTTA can send a bill months or years after the road was used and then threaten late fees if it's not paid quickly.

"These are still tolls that were incurred. I think people certainly expected to pay them or they wouldn't have been using the tollway," NTTA spokesman Michael Rey said.

Drivers also wonder what will happen if the NTTA can't find some drivers years later -- will the late fees pile up?

"If something had of happened to me, would my wife have ever remembered that we went through a toll area?" Parrish asked. "She may have wound up with real big charges and everything before it was settled."

"Any bill that's not paid would have a late fee attached to it after the time has elapsed," Rey said.

He described the decision to issue the bills now as "an attempt to be better stewards of toll payer money."

McDonnough plans to pay her bill on time, even though it took most of a year to get to her. She and nearly 500,000 other drivers are finding out that the road from the tollbooth to the day the bill shows up can stretch on and on and on.

"They should have billed me a long time ago if they were going to bill me," said McDonnough.

Documents Describe Brent's Failed Sobriety Test

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent says he's "just trying to deal" with the death of his teammate Jerry Brown. Brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the crash that killed Brown. Both men also were teammates at the University of Illinois.

The Dallas Cowboys player charged in the death of practice-squad player Jerry Brown failed several sobriety tests after the crash, according to police documents obtained by NBC 5.

Nose tackle Josh Brent was at the wheel of a car that overturned on the State Highway 114 service road near Cistercian Road at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Brown died of accidental causes from blunt force trauma to the head and neck, the Dallas County medical examiner said Monday.

Police are still working on the official police report about the crash. According to a preliminary report provided by an Irving police source, Brown was given several tests, including the "walk and turn."

The report outlines several ways that Brown failed, including not maintaining his balance during the instructional stage, starting too soon and stopping while walking in order to regain his balance.

The report goes on to say that Brown was given the one-leg stand, which he also failed by putting one foot down, using his arms for balance and swaying.

The officer deemed Brown had a "large quantity of alcohol in his system," the report states.

Irving police said Monday that they are preparing a timeline of what led to the fatal crash. Investigators say a timeline will help determine whether a bartender could be partly to blame in the crash for over-serving Brent.

Irving police spokesman Officer John Argumaniz said investigators are working with agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which enforces liquor laws.

"They'll look for any videos or any receipts or anything that they may be provided to try to trace where these people were prior to the incident," he said.

Police are also investigating why incorrect information about the crash location was initially provided to the media.

In the first few hours after the crash, police told NBC 5 and other media outlets that the crash occurred at 600 Cowboys Parkway.

The correct address on Highway 114 was provided long after Brent's 2007 Mercedes was removed from the scene and he was in jail.

Argumaniz said Irving police are reviewing telephone call recordings and talking with dispatchers about the location information.

The Dallas Morning News reported Monday that a witness claims to have been at the scene shortly after the crash and heard Brown calling for help and says that Brent did not respond.

Milner told the newspaper that the witness' claim is untrue.

According to an affidavit for determination of probable cause that Dallas police released Sunday, the responding officers saw Brent pulling Brown from the burning vehicle when they arrived at the crash scene. That information is also in the preliminary police report obtained by NBC 5.

"Everybody that's there said that -- he pulled him out," said George Milner, Brent's attorney. "Once the vehicle caught fire, he pulled his friend out of the vehicle to help him. He kept trying to talk to him."

Media representatives were not at the crash to independently verify what happened.

Brent, who is charged with intoxication manslaughter, was released from the Irving Jail on a $500,000 bond Sunday.

When Brent left jail, Milner said his client was devastated by what happened to his best friend.

"It's a horrible thing," he said. "If you understand how close they are, it's like, he got in a car accident and his little brother got killed."

A memorial for Brown will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday that the team has been focused on the player who was killed in car crash early Saturday morning.

Jerry Brown Jr. died Saturday after a car crash in Irving. The vehicle was driven by Josh Brent, a Cowboys defensive lineman who is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the fatal wreck.

Jones talked about the tragedy during Fox's pre-game broadcast Sunday, saying the team had been focused on Brown. The team is grieving, but Sunday's game against Cincinnati offers a way for players to honor Brown, he said.

"Our team loved him," Jones said. "They certainly are conscious of him and want his family to know and have as much of them as they can give. At the same time, they know that one of the best things they can do for him and his memory is to come to the game today, is go out and play well."

Jones did not mention Brent, who remained in jail in Irving on Sunday. Bail has been set at $500,000.

Jones said his team has been reminded that there is something more important than football.

"On the other hand, they know the best way they can honor Jerry -- because he was such a hard worker, so conscientious and enthusiastic about his career -- the best thing they can do for him is go out and play the way he would have liked to have seen them play and a team that he would have wanted to be a part of," he said.

The Cowboys signed Brown to their practice squad in October, but he had not been on the active roster.

Josh Brent muttered a few words on his way out of jail on Sunday afternoon.

His attorney, George Milner paraphrased it, "he said my best friend died and I'm trying to deal with that ."

Defensive lineman Brent, 24, is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the fatal crash that killed Jerry Brown Jr., a practice-squad linebacker, on Saturday.  Milner said it's all Brent's been thinking about since being arrested early Saturday morning.

"He wasn't worried about the jail thing... He's having a very difficult time understanding what has happened, comprehending it," said Milner.

Brent's future is now uncertain. His attorney wouldn't comment on his future with the Cowboys, "Thats a decision that has to be made within the Cowboys organitzation," Milner said. "I don't have anything to do with that, then the NFL will have a say in this as well."

Milner adds that although he posted bond on Sunday, it was set to high, suggesting it had to do with his Cowboys status.

"They're doing that because he's a Dallas Cowboy, because it's a high profile case and he's a Cowboy."

Jerry Brown, 25, was a passenger in the car Brent was driving when he crashed in the 1400 block of the State Highway 114 service road early Saturday morning.

Police release affidavit in case

According to an Irving police affidavit that was released Sunday, Brent refused a blood test but was forced to give a specimen in a mandatory blood draw because the crash was fatal.

The investigation into Saturday's crash is ongoing. Investigators are trying to determine where Brent and Brown spent the evening.

According to the affidavit, Brent admitted to drinking at a club before the crash but would not tell officers where.

Irving police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact police.

Brent arrested for DUI in 2009

Brent was arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence, speeding and driving with a suspended license, according to court records in Illinois, where he went to college.

He served 30 days in jail for the misdemeanor DUI charge and finished probation in July 2011.

Brent had several off-the-field issues at Illinois and was briefly suspended before leaving school early for the draft.

Brent and Brown were teammates in Illinois and lived together in Irving.

"The family of Jerry Brown Jr. wish to express our sincere appreciation for all of your prayers, phone calls, flowers, visits and other acts of kindness shown during the death of our son," Brown's family said in a statement to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "We would also like to send our prayers out to Josh Brent and his family as well. With kindness and love, The Family of Jerry Brown Jr."

Jones talked about the tragedy before Sunday's game against Cincinnati during the Fox pre-game show, saying the grieving team is focused on Brown.

"Our team loved him," he said. "They certainly are conscious of him and want his family to know and have as much of them as they can give. At the same time, they know that one of the best things they can do for him and his memory is to come to the game today, is go out and play well."

Jones did not mention Brent.

"I am devastated and filled with grief, filled with grief for the loss of my close friend and teammate Jerry Brown," Brent said from jail in a statement through his agent late Saturday night. "I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life."

Three-Hour Standoff in SE Dallas Ends Peacefully

Dallas police have arrested a 19-year-old without incident after a three-hour standoff early Saturday morning.

Police said David Ramirez locked himself inside van in the area of Elam Road and Sunburst Drive in southeast Dallas. A SWAT team was called in because police believed he had an assault rifle with him.

Nearby homes were evacuated as precaution.

Ramirez came out after about three hours with his hands up.

He faces charges of a prohibited weapon and sleeping in public.

Cowboys Player Charged With Intoxication Manslaughter

A Dallas Cowboys player has been arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the death of a teammate. NBC 5's Sara Story reports from Irving PD and NBC 5 Sports Director Newy Scruggs has comments from Jerry Jones.

A Dallas Cowboys player has been arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the death of a teammate.

Irving police said Josh Brent, 24, crashed in the 1400 block of the State Highway 114 service road at about 2:21 a.m.

Jerry Brown Jr., 25, a passenger in the vehicle, died at an area hospital. Brown was a practice-squad linebacker.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement Saturday. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

Police said Brent, whose full name is Joshua A. Price-Brent, was speeding when his vehicle hit the outside curb, causing it to flip at least one time.

Irving police said investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Brent was arrested at the crash scene after performing field sobriety tests. He was taken to an area hospital for a mandatory blood draw, police said.

When police learned that Brown had died, Brent was booked into the Irving City Jail on one count of intoxication manslaughter.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Brent was previously arrested on an intoxicated-driving charge in 2009 in Illinois when he was in college.

According to NBC 5 Sports Director Newy Scruggs, players were told about Brown's death before the team plane left for Cincinnati, where the Cowboys are scheduled to play Sunday.

The team said in a statement that Brent was not on the flight.

Brent has played in all 12 games this season and has been a bigger presence on defense with starting nose guard Jay Ratliff battling injuries. He made his first career start the season opener against the New York Giants and has 35 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks.

The Cowboys signed Brown to their practice squad Oct. 24, but he hasn't been on the active roster.
