Brennan Trainor Rodriguez, a 21-year-old student at Texas Christian University, has been arrested in connection with the death of fellow student Thomas "Ty" Boone Pickens IV, the grandson of T. Boone Pickens.
Rodriguez is accused of removing evidence, including drug paraphernalia, heroin and marijuana, from an apartment and hiding it from investigators looking into Pickens' death.
Pickens, 21, was pronounced dead Jan. 29 at Baylor All Saints Medical Center, where a friend brought him after saying he wouldn't wake up. He already may have been dead for several hours, the sources added.
At least one witness told investigators that Pickens took the prescription drug Xanax and later injected heroin in the hours before he died, the sources said.
On Monday afternoon, TCU released the following statement on Rodriguez's arrest:
"It is difficult to hear about this development, as the TCU community is still mourning Ty's death. Because this is a police investigation, all we can do is verify that he is a TCU student. As in all such cases, he has been suspended from the university pending a hearing through the university's disciplinary process."
NBC 5's Scott Gordon contributed to this report.
